Isaiah 61:1-3
TITLE OF SERMON:
*Dr. Jerry Falwell often said, “You are either in trouble, you just got out of trouble or you are about to get into trouble.”
*“You do not determine a persons greatness by his talent or wealth, as the world does, *but rather by what it takes to discourage him.”
*Rick Warren said, “Discouragement is a disease unique to human beings, and it's universal - eventually everyone gets it, including those in ministry.”
BREAK BETWEEN POINTS I AND II.
*II. What Are Causes And Effects Of Discouragement?
So here's what I've learned about battling discouragement:
WHAT CAUSES DISCOURAGEMENT?
#1 Cause - FATIGUE
When you’re physically or emotionally exhausted, you’re a prime candidate to be infected with discouragement. Your defenses are lowered and things can seem bleaker than they really are. This often occurs when you’re halfway through a major project and you get tired. This also can occur after great accomplishments where you know that God used you individually.
#2 Cause - FRUSTRATION
When unfinished tasks pile up, it's natural to feel overwhelmed. And when trivial matters or the unexpected interrupt you and prevent you from accomplishing what you really need to do, your frustration can easily produce discouragement. Frustration root because is fear, when we are living in fear we are not living in Faith. Only faith pleases God so we feel overwhelmed and discouraged from our own fears that have slowly replaced our faith.
#3 Cause - FAILURE
Sometimes, your best laid plans fall apart - the project collapses - the deal falls through - no one shows up to the event. How do you react? Do you give in to self-pity? Do you blame others? As one man said, Just when I think I can make ends meet - somebody moves the ends! That's discouraging!
#4 Cause - FEAR
Fear is behind more discouragement than we'd like to admit. The fear of criticism (What will they think?); the fear of responsibility (What if I can't handle this?); and the fear of failure (What if I blow it?) can cause a major onset of the blues. When we are living in fear we are not living in Faith. Only faith pleases God so we feel overwhelmed and discouraged from our own fears that have slowly replaced our faith.
III. How to Conqueror Discouragement & Application
*1 The first step to conqueror discouragement is to be saved by the blood of Jesus Christ.
Romans 10:9 says, "If you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord" and believe in your heart God raised Him from the dead you will be saved".
Isaiah 61:1 says God anointed Isaiah to proclaim the good news to the poor. Which is what? That Jesus Christ, the Son of God in every aspect God but yet flesh and blood died on the cross to save mankind from their sins so that we who are sinners may have a relationship with a Holy God.
If we do not have the living God inside our hearts we lack the power to conqueror, because it is not by our strength but His.
2 Corinthians 12:9 says, “But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.”
-When we are weak He is strong.
*2. Therefore what is the result in trusting in the Messiah?
-He binds up the brokenhearted. Which at one time or another is all of us. The Hebrew word for “binds” is habas, which means to tie, bandage, stitch. Think of God sowing up our wounds with His healing hand. We go through trials that can wound us to the core but know this God doesn’t leave us in our wounds, as it is stated He binds up our broken hearts.
- To proclaim freedom to the captives. There is something in all of us that has kept us captive. For example, fear, anxiety, panic, or shame. Some are obsessed with their job and making money they forget about their families and the will of God. Others have issue with pleasing everyone around them whether it is their parents, children, spouse, or co-workers. There are those who are addicted to drugs, alcohol, or pornography. But the great news is, the Lord gives us VICTORY and FREEDOM.
Have you noticed the things I have described are from the world, and not of God? Satan is really good at appealing to our flesh. But Jesus has come so that we may live in FREEDOM!!! Galatians 5:13 says,
“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.”
Galatians 5:1 also says, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”
That word “freedom” in the greek means this, “true liberty is living as we should not as we please”. That was the exact definition—I smiled when I read that because how often do we as Christians live as we please and still claim to be Christians? The Bible says no, you live by His word, He is the bread of life. So you want freedom from sin or the flesh.... You live in freedom and that is by living by the Word of God.
--He comforts us when we are at our weakest; he trades our despair and discouragement for a garment of praise, our ashes of mourning for a crown of beauty and oil of joy. What these few verses tell us is He changes what we do not have the ability to do. It was custom in the OT for people in mourning to cover their head in ashes.
A few examples of this:
2 Samuel 13 David’s daughter Tamar was raped by her brother Ammon and afterwards felt disgraced and broken. She left his room crying and covered her head with ashes.
In the book of Esther we learn that Hammon an evil man planned to destroy the Jewish race. Queen Esther’s uncle Mordecai upon hearing of Hammon’s plan “tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the city, wailing loudly and bitterly.”
Lastly, when David fled Jerusalem because he feared his son Absalom, he covered his head with dust because he mourned the actions of his flesh and blood.
But here is the best news; God takes our ashes and replaces it with a crown of beauty. We are His princesses!!! David penned in Psalms 3 “But you, LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high”. He does all this simply because He loves us! 1 John says God is love; meaning He can’t be anything other than love; it is His “is-ness”.
*3 How do apply these few verses and allow the Jesus’ power to change us?
-We must live a holy and righteous life.
1 Peter 1:16 says, “Be holy because I am holy”. Our life needs to be a reflection of Jesus. He honors the woman or man who’s heart is after His own heart. It is imperative for our lives to be different from the worlds. Too often Christians are camouflaged with the unsaved; therefore the unbeliever doesn’t see a need in changing their life if the Christian’s life isn’t any better. We need to remember we serve a holy and righteous God.
-Secondly we must have faith.
James 2:16 read, “As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.”
Do you want to break free from discouragement, fear, depression, and strong holds? You must put your faith into action. It is not enough to merely read the Words of God, but live it out. Before I read the Bible I pray the Lord makes the Bible come alive in my heart. It is hard in trying circumstances to live out faith, but we are told in Romans 5:3-5 “Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”
Do not allow Satan to get a foothold in your life. We must let Jesus fight for us and conquer the evil one, because in John 16:33 Jesus said, "In the world ye shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."
*To get the results described in Isaiah 61:1-3 it is simple; Jesus said in John 21: "If I will that he remain till I come what is that to you? You follow me". Meaning until Jesus calls us home we must follow Him.
*IV. A Checklist To Help You Combat Discouragement.
It takes faith to overcome discouragement. Faith is simply relying solely on the Lord and renouncing all other “worldly” forms of support. We have to relinquish control and place our lives into the hands of our Creator. Too often we waste our energy on trying to control our “destiny” instead of allowing the Lord to direct us; who already has our life mapped out according to His will. We need to have a heavenly goal in mind. This is particularly helpful to me, when the stresses of life seem to be unbearable, I remember this isn’t all life has for me, I was created for His purpose and when I finished the race, I get to see my Maker’s face and bow before the King who took my pain and sins.
Here are a few suggestions to keep focused on the prize of Christ:
*1. Focus on our awesome Creator.
*2. Remember the spiritual goal; finish the race.
*3. Pray and study God's Word every day.
*4. Be patient with yourself, with others, and with God.
*5. Be content, thankful, and generous.
*6. Be positive and active making each day count.
*7. Be faithful and obedient to God no matter what happens.
*Winston Churchill said, "Success in life is often nothing more than going from one failure to the next with undiminished enthusiasm."
*Dr. Jerry Falwell said, “ Your cup is half-full not half-empty” and “never say I quit or I can’t.”
*Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Jesus Christ who give me the strength.”
*A Crown of Beauty Instead of Ashes: How to overcome the discouragement blues
Introduction:
*Discouragement is something every one of us can relate to and I would bet no one likes. It is draining when we are discouraged isn’t it?
* It is so easy for Satan to attack us when we are discouraged. The Bible says in John 10:10 Satan has come to kill, steal, and destroy us. He wants to rob us of the abundant life and joy that Jesus promised to give us if we live in Him. But I must make it clear; a righteous life is one we must choose to live. How sad it is for some Christians who run the race and never cross the finish line fighting the good fight because they let discouragement, fear, and despair bring them down?
*There are times in our life when feel we just can’t do anything right, and the more we try to do right life continues to pile on top of us, can anyone relate? You know what I am talking about, you have heard the saying, “When it rains it pours”.
Here are few quotes I have heard about discouragement.
*Dwight L. Moody said, "I have never known God to use a discouraged person."*Dr.
*Job said our life is few days, full of many troubles.
*If this is the case then I ask…
-How do we in this life move away from fear and discouragement?
-How do we move from mourning to allowing God to bestow a crown of beauty upon our heads and cloak us with a garment of praise?
*Isaiah 61: 1-3 reads: (read the passage)
*I. Defining Discouragement
*A. Webster: “The feeling of despair or hopelessness in the face of obstacles or a state of distraught and loss of sense of enthusiasm, drive or courage.”
*B. Christian: “Taking our eyes off of God and placing them on the circumstances or allowing a situation to control our lives instead of allowing God to guide us.”
*II. What Are Causes And Effects Of Discouragement?
*Causes *Effects
*Prayerlessness *Hopelessness *Headaches
*Unconfused Sin *Fear of the feature *Lack of energy
*Failure and Embarrassment *Worry *Isolate yourself
*Routines and Boredom *Pessimism *Lonely
*Constant Pressure *Irritability *Fear of dying
*Betrayal and Disappointment *Inability to concentrate
*Bitterness *Fear of change
*Selfishness and Stagnation *Lack of confidence
